Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cells in an Office Setting

The simple and cost effective techniques of obtaining and performing injections of Adipose Stem Cells (SVF), Bone Marrow Stem Cells (BMAC), and Platelet Rich Plasma in the office setting will be discussed. The adipose stem cells are obtained from a simple lipo aspiration and subsequent enzymatic digestion and centrifugation. The bone marrow stem cells are obtained from aspiration and centrifugation.  In addition to using the stem cells, the use of a simple fat graft which acts as a scaffold for the stem cells, will also be discussed.

The discussion stresses indications of when to use each type of cell and when to use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as an adjunct with these cells. The lecture discusses the various types of stem cells and their pitfalls.  Also to be discussed is the use of various growth factors including Human Growth Hormone which seem to enhance stem cell mobilization.  In addition to these growth factors, the use of supplements, hyperbaric oxygen and the institute’s results (over 3500 cases with results equaling 85%) will be reviewed.

The conditions which this presentation discusses pertain to the musculo-skeletal system.  These conditions include degenerative arthritis and many other soft tissue injuries of various joints. The principles espoused have application to oral/maxillofacial surgical procedures in general.

Dr. Joseph Purita, a pioneer in the use of the laser in orthopedic surgery, graduated from Georgetown University Medical School and served his surgical internship at the University of Florida Medical Center. Following completion of a residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he served as chief administrative resident, Dr. Purita joined the Boca Raton Orthopedic Group in 1981.  Dr. Purita is an instructor and proctor of surgeons in the use of lasers in arthroscopic and orthopedic surgery at a variety of area hospitals. Dr. Purita is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in the county using platelet rich plasma to treat a variety of orthopedic conditions.
